Southold Shoreline cleanup coming soon; residents can deposit debris for free

Beautiful beach days are coming and that means dedicated volunteers are gearing up to join with Southold Town to clean up the shoreline.
The third annual joint SoutholdVOICE/Town of Southold Shoreline Clean-Up will take place May 17 and 18.
Last year, the cooperative effort resulted in over 21,000 pounds of refuse being removed from the town’s shoreline.
Flotsam, jetsam, and other debris shows up on the shoreline areas of the town through tidal action, storms, or neglect, SoutholdVOICE representatives said. Types of debris can range from balloons, all types of plastics, used hygiene products, tires, tree limbs, entire trees, dock pieces, flotation, and boat parts — basically anything that has the smallest capacity to float.
“Considering that some debris was as small as a plastic lid or straw, that’s a heap of junk,” representatives of SoutholdVOICE, a non-profit oganization comprised of waterfront property owners, said in a release.
Residents will be able to bring any flotsam/jetsam or other shore-laden debris to one of 15 “Drop Spots” throughout town, where town staffers will remove the trash.
Residents will also be allowed to bring the debris, over the scales, at the town’s transfer station on Cox Lane in Cutchogue for free.
