PRESS RELEASE

PILOT for ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT for ONSITE WASTEWATER TREATMENT

APPLICATION for PARTICIPATION

Residential, Institutions and Commercial Property Owners Eligible

Application Due:  4:30 p.m. on OCTOBER 9, 2015

Peconic Green Growth (PGG) with support from Suffolk County proposes to install eight alternative recharge dispersal fields, which will replace the typical leaching pits currently used throughout Suffolk County.  The new approach will disperse wastewater higher in the soil profile, allowing for better treatment in soils. Shallow systems have the potential to replace irrigation systems, reducing use of potable water and fertilizers.  Property owners need to fill out an application either online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/OnsitePilot or by mailing a hard copy to:

The project is being funded and supported by the Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program and Land Stewardship Initiatives, time and materials generously donated by manufacturers, installers and designers, as well as other funding sources. Priority will be given to properties in watersheds where nitrogen mitigation is a targeted strategy. The intent is to eliminate nitrogen loading to groundwater at its source. This will protect both drinking water quality and surface waters. Excess nitrogen is considered the principal cause of harmful algal blooms that can impact human health and reduce levels of oxygen in the water, threatening shellfish, fish and habitat survival rates.
